Check Your Ego at the Door

When a group is composed of one or more individuals who have strong egos it is difficult for the group to achieve its full potential.  But, when each member of the group "checks his/her ego at the door," then a free and open exchange is possible and the result is better and more complete.

Ego is a powerful aspect of personhood.   It is centered in what as been called "the pride of life."  It is here that the destructive aspect of ego is clearly evident - exaggerated pride.  When pride is mixed with self-obsession the result is conceit.  This gives rise to the saying, "Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall."  Exaggerated pride can be very expensive.

On the other hand, a honest appraisal of one's abilities and achievements is always appropriate. But. when self-appraisal results in an attitude of superiority rather than one of thankfulness and a sense of being blessed, the outcome is a wall that separates and isolates us from others.  In this separation and isolation, we loose.  We loose access to the knowledge, creativity, and insights of others.  But more importantly, we loose the possibility for personal growth.  When no one is left to challenge our thinking, self-deception can take its toll.

The conclusion is clear: we need to check our ego at the door.
